Understanding and addressing selection criteria in your application is key to demonstrating your fit for the role and advancing your executive career within the UK's competitive job market. They may be explicit (you're told what they are are) but are frequently implicit (you need to glean what they may be).

FAQS

What exactly are 'selection criteria'?

Think of it as your road-map to standing out, ensuring your application showcases the exact skills and accomplishments your potential employer is looking for. More...

Selection criteria spell out the specific skills, experiences, and personal qualities ("attributes") a company seeks in candidates for a role, particularly important for executives aiming to align with an organisation's strategic objectives and culture.

These criteria often encompass a range of must-have and nice-to-have qualifications, such as:

  • Relevant educational achievements and professional background.
  • Proven leadership and team management abilities.
  • Strategic planning and industry-specific knowledge.
  • Essential personal traits, like reliability and the ability to adapt.
Also known by various terms such as Job Specs, Position Requirements, and Competency Frameworks, these criteria provide a clear picture of what is expected from applicants, covering both technical competencies and behavioural attributes.

I personally make sure your CV matches what employers want, based on our chat about your work goals, history, skills, and what you're good at. Here's how it goes: More...

  • First Chat

We start by talking through your work life and goals. This gives me a full picture so I can make a CV that's just right for you.
  • Making Your CV

Using what we talk about, I put together a CV that shows off your best qualities and fits what employers are looking for, making your application more likely to get noticed.
  • Highlighting What You're Great At

It's not just about making a CV. It's about making sure your strengths and what makes you different shine through, so your application really stands out.
  • Checking the Details

Getting the small things right matters. We'll go over your CV carefully to make sure it looks good, reads well, and doesn't have mistakes, so you can be proud to send it off.
  • Making Sure Your CV Gets Seen

Most places use robot systems (ATS) to check CVs before humans read them. I'll make sure yours works with these systems so it gets through to the right people.
I'm here to help you do well, giving you honest advice on how to make your CV better. If we're not aiming for one job in particular, I'll use what jobs generally look for to make your CV appeal to more employers. But remember, a CV made just for one job works best.

How To Mess Up A Job Application

There are plenty of stories of people who've applied for hundreds of jobs and never heard back. Here's why: More...

Ignoring the ATS

The main obstacle? Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). More than 70% of CVs are screened and rejected by a robot at this initial stage because they don't match the employer's job description. This is the curse of the generic CV.

Generic CVs

Sending the same CV to every job is a sure way to fail. Customise your CV for each application, underscoring how your particular skills and experiences make you an ideal candidate for that role.

Mismatch with Job Specifications

If your CV doesn't reflect the skills and experience listed in the job advert, it might be bypassed. Ensure your CV aligns closely with the job requirements stated in the advert.

Overly Designed CVs

Beware of those "designed CVs" sold by some, promising style over substance. They might look appealing with their colours and columns, but often, ATS can't process them. Opt for simpler, straightforward layouts that ensure readability by the ATS.

To increase your chances of landing an interview, focus on creating a CV that's not only clear and concise but also tailored for the job at hand and compatible with ATS requirements.

Over 70% of CVs never make it past the digital gatekeepers. Why? They're set up to filter out CVs that don't match certain keywords or criteria the job's asking for.
