Outplacement Workshops

These online workshops, for small or large groups, are designed to provide practical help and support to those facing unemployment or redeployment.

Why workshops?

Many employees do not have recent experience with the job application process, and especially ATS screening. Workshops provide a cost-effective overview, with general examples and Q&A sessions.

CV development

What is a modern CV; what is its purpose; and what is your objective in crafting it?

Getting your CV read by a human

Why are so many applications from qualified people immediately rejected? Why does understanding ATS screening matter in job applications?

Handling emotions

Losing a job can often lead to feelings of sadness, frustration, anger, and even depression. An employment plan and strategy may help counter this.

Know Yourself

Discover how to focus on accomplishments rather than simply stating duties and responsibilities. Understand the value of your knowledge, experience, and hard and soft skills.

Know the Position

Learn how to read and interpret a job advertisement to discover what an employer really values and how to pitch your accomplishments to meet their needs.

Career transitions

Transferable skills could include communication skills, problem-solving skills, leadership skills, etc. Learn how you might adapt them to an employer's environment and situation.

Selection criteria

Learn how to match relevant skills, knowledge, and experience precisely to an employer's selection criteria to get an edge over other candidates.

Customising each application

Learn why generic and AI-led CVs and cover letters may derail your job search. Understand the limitations of ChapGPT and AI.

Outplacement Coaching

These 1:1 or small group online or phone services provide practical help and support to those with rusty jobseeker skills facing a change in career direction.

Why coaching?

Long-term, vulnerable, or older employees and many professionals and executives may benefit from personalised and guided assistance, which can be provided one-on-one or in small groups.

Career strategy

Taking the time to reflect on your strengths, skills, values, and goals may help you identify the types of roles and industries that align with your interests and goals.

Career transition

In cases of redundancy, career transition may be the only viable option for regaining employment. A mentor will help you consider your strengths and areas for improvement and how these align with different career paths.

Pitching transferable skills

Your layoff may be a trend. Demonstrating to an employer your transferable skills shows that you can succeed in a variety of occupations and environments.

The employer's perspective

Carefully considering the employer's perspective can help you tailor your job application to their specific needs and significantly increase your chances of being selected for an interview.

Focussing on accomplishments

Learning to focus on accomplishments in job applications is crucially important because it allows you to showcase your skills and capabilities in a concrete and measurable way.

Interview skills

Interviewing for a job can be intimidating, so it is important to hone your interview skills and prepare and practice well ahead of time.

Networking

Networking is an important part of any job search, and it can be especially useful when transitioning to a new career. As a first step, a mentor can make sure your CV and LinkedIn profile accurately highlight any qualities and achievements that are relevant to your new career path.

About Elle

I'm Elle. I conduct all of the outplacement work personally (no juniors or writing outsourced to CV mills). I have over ten years of experience in an employment agency dealing in executive and professional recruitment and outplacement across a range of industries and on three continents (Europe, the USA, and Australia). I'm degree-educated, a qualified marketer and expert writer, and a founder member of CVRA (CV writing education). Understanding keyword marketing is becoming increasingly important as the use of robotic CV and resume (keyword) screening by ATS becomes more common. My corporate career began as an information scientist at AstraZenca, but my true love has always been creative writing and solving puzzles. This array of science, data, words, and creativity is perfectly suited to high-level job applications: understanding the employer's needs, matching skills, knowledge, cultural nuance, and experience to those needs, and pitching a compelling proposition.

My 'The CV Times' newspaper is updated frequently with news and views on Executive Recruitment matters and tips on taking control of your career.

Client Testimonials

After I had been given notice of redundancy following twelve years service, I had been struggling with my job search (and motivation) for months and decided to attend Elle's online CV writing workshop that was offered by my employer. The workshop was fantastic, Elle provided clear and concise "no bullsh*t" guidance on how to create a CV that truly showcases my transferable skills and years of experience. I now have a CV that I am proud to send out and am much more confident and selective in my job search. I highly recommend Elle's services to anyone looking to figure out how to pitch their CV and improve their prospects. It's as much about realising that you are employable and have a lot to offer as it is the technical skills to write a CV. Thanks!

Frequently Asked Questions

Career Strategy

What makes an effective CV?

An effective CV should be well organised, concise, and easy to read. It should include relevant information about the applicant's education, experience, accomplishments, character, and skills. Relevant in this context means it should be tailored to the specific job or position the applicant is applying for. Additionally, it should be free of errors and use appropriate language and formatting.

An executive CV has to compete with high-quality submissions from other applicants. It typically includes more detailed information about the applicant's professional experience and accomplishments. It should also include demonstrated evidence of the applicant's leadership skills, work ethic, management experience, business network, and any other relevant qualifications.

How do I set out my accomplishments?

It is crucial to state your accomplishments in a CV because it helps to demonstrate your skills and experience to potential employers. Accomplishments can also help to show how you have added value to previous employers and can help to set you apart from other applicants. This might seem obvious, but there is a common focus in CVs upon duties and responsibilities.

In very simple terms, your CV should demonstrate your critical thinking abilities to make money, and/or save money, and/or save time and improve productivity for the enterprise.

CVs & an ATS (Applicant Tracking System)

An ATS (Applicant Tracking System) is software used by employers to manage and filter job applications. It scans CVs for keywords and phrases related to the job and ranks applicants based on their qualifications. This means that CVs must be tailored to the job and include relevant keywords and phrases in order to be seen by the ATS.

An ATS is a Google-like algorithm that is used as an initial screen by many employers to disqualify low-quality CVs. Many well-qualified candidates are caught in this trap due to poor document formatting and the absence of appropriate document header text and keywords.

How do I address Selection Criteria?

When addressing selection criteria in a CV, it is essential to provide specific examples of how you have met each criterion. You should include details of any relevant experience, skills, or qualifications that you possess that demonstrate your ability to meet the criterion. Additionally, you should provide evidence of your achievements and successes in the areas outlined in the selection criteria.

Each employer determines the scope and nature of the questions or tests that will be posed, and they are becoming increasingly qualitative in nature. Anyone writing on your behalf will need a good insight into who you are.

It's not unusual for an employer to require detailed answers to five or six questions, and this takes time and expertise.

What are common job application errors?

There are many common errors that applicants make when applying for a job, but here are some of the most common:

  • Failing to tailor the CV or cover letter to the specific job opportunity can prevent the CV from passing an ATS filter and make it difficult for hiring managers to see how your skills and experience match their specific needs. This can make your application appear less personalised and less compelling.
  • Including irrelevant or outdated information on the CV. It's important to keep your CV up-to-date and relevant to the job you are applying for. Avoid including irrelevant or outdated information that could distract from your most important qualifications and achievements.
  • Not proofreading the application materials. It's essential to carefully proofread your CV, cover letter, and any other application materials before submitting them. Even a few spelling or grammar mistakes can make you appear careless or unprofessional and decrease your chances of being invited for an interview.
  • Not providing enough detail about your skills and experience. It's important to provide enough detail about your skills and experience to give hiring managers a clear picture of your qualifications. Avoid using vague or general statements that don't provide specific examples of your accomplishments and abilities.
  • Failing to follow the application instructions. Many job postings include specific instructions for how to apply, such as how to submit your application materials or how to format your CV. Failing to follow these instructions can make it difficult for hiring managers to evaluate your application and decrease your chances of being considered for the job.

  • Acknowledge their feelings and allow them to express their emotions.
  • Provide reassurance that they have good prospects to find a new job and equip them with the tools to do so.

Do you offer services for executives?

With executive and professional jobs, the application process is more rigorous and extensive.

It's not unusual for an executive or professional job application to include multiple rounds of interviews, as well as the requirement for written assessments, work samples, psychometric tests, and even reference checks.

Addressing selection criteria is typically more complex, and the need for effective personal branding through such mediums as LinkedIn is more crucial.

Outplacement assignments generally include a mixture of executives, managers, and general employees, so I am used to dealing with a range of needs.
